How much fabric will I need for a Max Costume form Where the Wild Things Are?

Amount of Fabric: Four yards required for size six and four female adult – above that size you will need double length of the neck to heel and generally six yards works fine.

Fabric: The most authentic Max Costume is made from craft store fleece in off white. When selecting fabric consider its transparency. Off white fleece can be thinly transparent. This is why cotton flannel is not a good choice. Make sure the fleece is thick enough to NOT be transparent.

Pattern: You do not have to purchase a pattern but if you are inexperienced in sewing this could be a help.

Max Where the Wild Things Are Adult Costume

• Assuming you are purchasing 60 inch width fabric
• For size six and under you will need only one length from nape of neck to heel plus six inches.
• Typically two yards works fine leaving a bit of extra but you can reduce if you wish.
• Adults above female size six this will need to use two lengths of from nape to neck or four yards.
• Add one additional yard for hood.
• One additional yard for sleeves.

Max Where the Wild Things Are Child Costume:

• Measure neck to heel and double for above female size six
• Length of arm one length and leave long to roll up to give oversized look
• Hood needs one yard. This seems like a lot of fabric but hood is double thickness

Max’s Accessories!!!

Max also has a wand, a crown and a nice bushy tail.

Whiskers: Max’s whiskers are made from black pipe cleaners.

Wand: His wand is made from a dowel rod, black foam, and a plastic Christmas ball.

Tail: Buy an 18 inch width of 60 inch wide fur and consider inserting 14 gauge wire to give it a nice curve if you wish.

Crown: Wool Felt trimmed in a bit of tail fur.

Buttons: Craft foam is covered with fleece for oversized buttons

Closure: Stips of velcro are used to close body suit

Scary Claws: White Craft foam is used for mitten claws

Ears: 14 gauge wire makes the ears stand up – five feet

Max Crown

His crown is made from wool felt, which is expensive at about $12.00 a yard. If you prefer you may make it from thinner felt and slip in a bit of light cardboard for stiffness. Cereal boxes are the perfect card board weight for this. Also you can make it from matting board in a copper color and just paint the inside black with craft paint.

Max’s Tail

Select your tail fabric from the fur section in the craft store.

The tail is tied around the waist and has an opening in the PJ’s so it does not pull down the costume by sewing it directly on to the costume. For little ones do not make it so long that they trip over it, or that their friends can step on it.

Make the tail more narrow at the top. Add 14 gauge wire if you want to give it a little twist.

Max’s Ears

If you do not have batting, cut your fabric strips into tiny slivers and use that – or – use paper towels.

Making Max’s Costume Body Suit Pattern

• For perfect sizing I took an old pair of blue jeans to cut as the pattern and just cut it up to the shoulder. The body is just two pieces of fabric.
• There is no more important action to take than to make the length from the nape of the neck to the center crotch long enough. No matter how long you think it should be add a good three to six inches.

• There is a fold on the side and no side seam — this means this is ONE PIECE for a total of two pieces for the body suit.
• A placket was made for the opening and then a flap was attached.
• The neck is trimmed in a mandarin collar.
• Rather than have wide arms that flap around we narrowed the arms at the cuff area but left them really long.
• The folded up cuff (folded four time) gives the appearance of being oversized, without really being oversized.

• Sew the shoulders together.
• Sew the center seam just as you would a pair of pants.
• Really this is just an extra long waisted single seam pant (that goes up to your shoulders!).

• Cut an opening for the arm and measured a piece of fabric that wide. The length is to the tip of the finger plus six inches.
• Attach the arm to the costume and sewed down the underside of the arm.
• Seriously narrow the arm at the elbow to a tight fitting sleeve at the wrists.
• This costume does not not have the big floppy sleeve. However, to create the image and illusion of over sized PJ’s with the extra length of the sleeve that was then rolled up four times.

• Make long placket to be placed on the front seem and attached it.
• Glue the covered buttons to that placket.
• Use white craft store foam as a base for the buttons to cover with the fleece.
• The PJ’s are closed with velcro squares placed on the underside of the placket.

Max’s Tail

• When cutting the tail leave a good bit of bulk for the inside seam so there is no stuffing.
• The tail is attached to elastic and sticks through the PJ’s.
• Attaching a tail directly to the PJ’s weighs the costume down.
• The extra tail fur will trim the crown.

PJ Buttons

• The PJ’s close with velcro.
• Buttons are not real buttons but are hot glued fabric on craft store foam.
• The buttons are hot glued on body suit.
• First cut your buttonbase into an oval piece from craft store foam.
• These are oversized – extremely large and support the oversized look of rolling up the arms and the legs.
• These are decorative buttons only
• The velcro holds the costume close

Standard Costume Hood with Band

• It has two sides sewn together
• Make two complete hoods and join them right sides together.
• Cut four pieces of the hood as shown below — adjusting for the size of your Max.
• Two and two are sewn together to make two hoods.
• Then the two hoods are sewn together to make one hood with a lining.
• The bottom of the hood is banded, just as Max’s hood is banded.

• I used 14 gauge wire and slipped it through the top of the hood to hold the ears
• The ears are stuffed with extra fleece cut in small piece.
• Ears are slipped over the wire
• Ears are sewn to hood

Moishe –Looking Personable with Modeling Clay!

Here is the happy Moishe.  Inside two layers of foam are glued into the top and a bicycle helmet is glued on to that.  The mouth serves as the window.

Moishe Costume from Where the Wild Things Are is made from a bouncing ball with five layers of paper mache.

Moishe Begins as A Beach Ball!

Moishe began as a $2.77 ball or you may chose to use a deflatable beach ball.

We added five layers of paper mache allowing each layer to dry completely.

We reinforced the neck area with about two more layers of paper mache.

Because Moishe has an oval head we glued batting to the side of his head and put the fur over the batting.

Batting to the side of the head gives the head a good shape.

We cut a mouth and painted his face.

We glued on the teeth, hair and horns.

Teeth and horns made from styrofoam cup and white duct tape.

The eyes are made from tennis balls cut in half. The nose is half a tennis ball with some duct tape and covered with two layers of paper mache.

The eyes were added at the third level of paper mache.

Modeling clay was added to the side of the nose for nostrils and above the lip for lip pads.

The teeth are made from white duct tape taped over a file folder and THEN cut into pointed shapes.

The horns are made from a styrofoam cup but into points and then wrapped with white duct tape.

The nose receive a bit of contour with modeling clay applied to the sides.  More is applied to create cheek bones and lip pads.

The modeling clay to the paper mache head for enhances the dimensions and contour.

Two layers of foam rubber on the inside of the top of the head were added.

A very light weight bicycle helmet was then glued in.

This left the eyes at mouth level with great vision and a very good fit.

Moishe’ Sweater

To his sweater. This is for a large man but is on a small female mannequin.

His tail is really black and furry with 14 gauge wire in it to give it shape.

For Wild Thing we have decided on our a low pile furry fabric and have cut it out in strips.

• Our orange stripes are nine inches long and the white stripes are seven inches long.
• We sewed them together to make the body shirt for Wild Thing.
• We have three orange stripes and four white stripes.

Cut one half of the shirt, fold it over to cut the other side so they will match.

With some extra fabric we made a tail prototype until we find the perfect furry fabric.

We put four darts in the front of the overshirt at the bottom in the front and the four darts in the back of the shirt.

For the sleeves the first orange stripe is four and a half inches, the white stipe is seven inches, the next orange stripe is nine inches.

The width of the sleeve is the same width of the opening for the sleeve.

Attach sleeve.

Put a small roll collar at the top.

Mittens

For the sleeves the first orange stripe is four and a half inches, the white stipe is seven inches, the next orange stripe is nine inches.

The width of the sleeve is the same width of the opening for the sleeve.

Attach sleeve.

Put a small roll collar at the top.

Moishe Scales on Jogging Pants

These are the best pants!!!

Gray jogging pants — two sizes larger — were puchased.

The pants were cut open from the inner seam and the felt scales were sewn on.

Then the pants were turned right sides together and sewn back up.

The feet are shoe covers with felt sewn on the top.

Then the white craft store foam scales are sewn on.

Fairies never shop .. They find most things.
Many items can be made for free from items in your home – or – for very little expense.

How to Make a Fairy Wand for a Frugal FairyItems Needed

• 36 inch dowel rod (49 cents)
• 2/3rd Yard Tulle (total) (99 cents a yard)
• 3 Yards Quarter Inch Wide Ribbon (49 cents a yard)
• Paint, Elmers Glue and Glitter (or hot glue gun and glue)

Selecting Tulle

• Select three to four colors tulle
• Tulle strips will be 3/4 inches wide
• Tulle strips will be approximately 18 inches long
• Total of Eight 3/4 inch wide strips of each color
• You will need about four inches of width of three or four colors
• Select one or two pieces of tulle with sparkles and glitters

Step Number One

• Take 36 inch inch width dowel rod. (Yellow Tips)
• Cut one 24 inch length for older fairy
• Cut two 18 inch lengths for smaller fairies.

Step Number Two

• Can cut dowel rod with cutting pliers
• These purchased at 99 cent store for 99 cents.

Step Number Two (second option)

• Can use plastic coat hanger for wand.
• Cut with cutting pliers.
• Leave tiny curve at one end to attach ribbons and tulle.

Step Number Three

• Cutting Tulle
• Tulle is 54 inches wide.
• Fold into approximately eight inch fold.
• Cut three quarter inch strips from side.
• Use three to four colors and cut four strips or each color.
• This shortenss the cutting process.

-OR-

Just grab the colors of tulle in a bunch and cut your 3/4 inch lengths.

Step Number Four

• Take strips and cut in half long ways.

Step Number Five

• Select quarter inch ribbons
• Cut ribbons between 24 and 16 inches.
• Six strips
• Total ribbon 4 yards.

Step Number Six

• Take one strip ribbon and tie tulle and ribbon at half way point.

CREATE TWO OF THESE!

But do not over do with the tulle!

Don’t make your wand look like a dishwashing net scrubber.

Step Number Seven

• Take wand and paint chosen color
• When paint dries coat with Elmers glue
• Sprinkle with glitter
• Can coat with glue by putting a Ziplock bag on your hand and spreading
  glue.

If called away just put brush in ZipLock bag and place in freezer.

Step Number Eight

• Once gliltter has dried put a bit of glue around top part of wand.
• Take ribbon that tied tulle and ribbons and tie it around the top
  of the wand.
• Wand will be one sided
• Take second bunch of tulle and ribbon and tie right under the first
  tulle/ribbon bunch facing the opposite side for balance.

Step Number Nine

• Put tiny drops of Elmer’s glue on tulle and ribbon.
• Be sure drops are small because large drops will run.
• Can use hot glue as well. Mini sticks are preferred.
• Sprinkle with glitter over manilla folder or something to catch excess
  glitter.
• Can purchase glitter glue if you wish — but why?

Purple Princess Fairy Tutu Costume

No Sew Ballet Tutu for Play and Fun!

Purple Princess The Fairy Tutu is a simple no sew tutu with wand, crown and boa!

The Fairy Tutu Bodice is stretch velvet sewn in a tube style.  If you do not have a sewing machine – you can still make this bodice with a simple needle and thread in 15 minutes!

The Fairy Tutu Crown is made from craft store foam and embelleshed with jewels.

The Fairy Wand is made from a dowel rod, ribbon, tulle and net from the no sew tutu.

The Fairy No Sew Tutu is made from net and tulle and attached to an elastic band.

The Fairy Tutu New Sew / No Sew Tutu

The amount of fabric required depends on whether:

• Tulle, net or a combination of tulle and net will be used
• The length of the tutu will modify the amount of fabric
• The fullness of the tutu will impact the amount of fabric

• Lavendar and Purple Tulle were purchased 1 yard each
• Pink Tulle was not used. (Changed our minds … loved the true purple look)
• 2 yards of quarter inch lavendar ribbon used
• 30 inches 1/4 inch black elastic
• 36 inches sash ribbon

The Fairy Tutu

Net and tulle come in 54 inch widths

• It is easiest to cut tulle and net across the 54 inch width.
• The lenth of the strip will be twice as long as the length of the tutu.
• 54 / 4 = 13.5
• A 13 inch length will be the easiest and works for most tutus

Individual strips of tulle are net are knotted around elastic with a larkshead knot (which is a macrame knot)

The Fairy Tutu How Long to Make the Elastic?

• Long enough to tie a square not and leave some extra to attach a sash — if you want a sash.
• Place elastic around fairy’s waist.
• 1/4 inch elastic used here.
